Situated by the seaside in the middle of Navarino Bay, Pylos is the home of hero Nestor, the eldest and wisest fo the Greeks who fought at Troy. During the Greek War of Independence, the Naval Battle of Navarino took place on 20 October 1827. Joined forces form the United Kingdom, France and Russia, destroyed the combined Ottoman-Egyptian fleet. As a result, Pylos was liberated from the Ottoman Empire.
